Deleting old categories

I've tried to delete old categories for gigs (for myself, this is just various projects), however it will not let me delete them as they are attached to events.  Those events are well in the past and there is no plans to book anything under those categories.  Is there a way to delete these?  The deactivate option....does that remove it from my list as an option to choose when assigning an event? 

Could there be an option to "do you want to delete this cateogory and associated events?" checkbox or something?

You should deactivate the categories, and then they will no longer appear in the list when adding a new event.
