Title: What hardware would you advice for using midi/backtracks/video with ipad
Post by: Snuf on January 27, 2021, 12:43:01 AM
Hello,

I'm now using an alesis IO dock  version 2 which doesn't have a video output. How would you use the ipad for a band controlling patches via midi, playing backtracks and using the video option.
If i buy the new ipad with usb-c can i use a usb-c dock to connect midi/audio/video for a gig?
Can't find any interfaces which combines all of these outputs

You could transmit video wirelessly to an AppleTV while the iPad is in your Alesis dock.

You can use a USB hub to connect multiple USB devices, but I don't think you can get video from that, unless someone makes a Lightning connector with both video and USB outputs.

Apple tv is a good option.
Or a usb-c kit for the new ipad is a temporary option.
Found this link:

But i hope companies like alesis or behringer jump into this and update their docks

Tried this via apple tv, but the the audio doesn't go to the normal output but to the apple tv.
Is this something that can be changed?
The video doesn't start automatically. Can this auto start when selecting the song?

"the audio doesn't go to the normal output but to the apple tv"

With the AppleTV connected, you can turn on Settings > Audio & MIDI > Multi-Route Audio, save the page and then see what appears in the Recording 1 L/R Output Channel. But I expect that you can't separate the audio from the video.

Yes, please see the section titled Layout Actions on this page:

When setting this option, start video when song is chosen, the backtrack goes to a minus position.
When setting the option off, it works again.

I saw a similar problem a while ago when the video contained audio that was in a different format than the standalone audio file. Can you check that? I think it was the sampling rate but might have been the bit depth. If your video doesn't need to have sound, you could edit it to remove the audio track completely.

P.S. I want that video frame as my desktop background. :-)

That did the trick, connected another video with no sound and that works fine!

This is the video you saw:
