What does a warning symbol (exclamation point inside a triangle) next to my projects on the home screen mean?

That means you have in-app notifications that you haven't viewed. You can click the notification button in the top toolbar inside those projects to view them. You can change your preferred notification style (email, SMS or app) on your Account > Users > Edit page on the website.
