As suspected, user error.  Found a Midi preset that was Paired with another than called a third, to a loop.  All fixed, reorganized, works fine.  Thanks for the input.

Got it. Normally a preset won't let you attach a preset that would create an immediate loop, but it doesn't check for third-level loops.
