Auto-Scroll duration

Hi Arlo,

I've read the Performing with SLM tutorial and have a question regarding Auto-scroll:

The tutorial says, in part:
If the automatically calculated scroll speed doesn't work for you, you can go to Settings > Automation > Calculate Auto-Scroll Duration and select Manual. Then a field for Auto-Scroll Pre-Roll and Auto-Scroll Duration will appear in the edit window for each song. You can enter values here to control the scroll speed for each song regardless of its duration value.

My question is...how would I set the values [manually] if I simply want Auto-scroll to start when I tap the icon and stop when I tap it a second time...start again when I tap a third time, etc.?

I've tried entering values, substantially < the duration of the attached recording, but still can't seem to get it right. I still see a Pre-Roll countdown, even though I haven't set a Pre-Roll amount.

Thanks,

arlo

In addition to changing Settings > Automation > Calculate Auto-Scroll Duration to manual, you would want to turn off Settings > Automation > Recalculate Speed If Overridden. Then you would control the scroll speed with the Auto-Scroll Duration you enter for each song ... a shorter duration would lead to a faster scroll speed.

I don't know why you're seeing a pre-roll ... I don't, when use these settings and leave the Auto-Scroll Pre-Roll field empty.

Thanks Arlo.

I did not have the Recalculate Speed if Overridden option disabled. I'll see if that makes a difference.

Hi Arlo,

That didn't correct the problem.

Is there no way to have Auto-Scroll respond without entering an Auto-Scroll value at the Song level at all?

For example, I have a song with a duration of 5:02 (302.00 in SLM terms). I have that duration entered for the Song, but nothing for the Auto-Scroll or Auto-Scroll Pre-Roll, because I'd like to just have the scrolling start when I tap the button...wherever that may be in the song. When I manually tap the Auto-Scroll icon, it has a 62 second pre-roll.

I find that I need this, since I am zooming a document [lyrics] and can't figure out the correct mathematical formula to make SLM happy (song duration, minus whatever it takes to get it right). Besides, if I have to enter a value, based on how I want the Auto-Scroll to respond, even though I've selected `manual, and not `automatic', that speed would change if I zoom out of the document, right?

Thanks,

arlo

You can leave the song fields empty and fall back to the default song duration set at the show level, but then you wouldn't be able to control the auto-scroll speed for each song.

I'm not sure what you're looking at when you say "302 in SLM terms." The duration fields on the song or show edit pages use a minutes:seconds format.

You need to enter your desired auto-scroll duration into the Auto-Scroll Duration field, not the Duration field (which is used to calculate your show duration). If you leave the Auto-Scroll Duration field empty, the app falls back to automatically calculating the scroll duration, which is why you're still seeing the pre-roll.

Yes, the auto-scroll speed will change to match your document scroll level. This is a good thing because it allows you to zoom your document in or out without having to reconfigure your auto-scroll values each time.

It sounds like you don't care what speed the auto-scroll uses and you just want some generic auto-scroll speed that you can turn on and off manually as you play, but that's not really auto-scrolling. You might be happier just using a remote control action to send Next Screen messages, to page through your document or lyrics as you play.

Thanks Arlo. I'll just follow your suggestions.

BTW, I was referring to how SLM shows the events in the Automation log. It would be nice if that was also minutes:seconds there as well, or better yet...an option to change to bars:beats.

Minutes:seconds in the automation track edit window is possible, I'd just have to customize that number stepper some more. Bars:beats would be a bigger change because automation tracks are run on time ... so the app would have to use the tempo entered for the song and use that to convert the bars:beats value back to a minutes:seconds value. That would require entering an exactly accurate tempo, which you could do for backing tracks that you've created but you might not be able to do from third-party backing tracks. I'll add both to my wish list.
