Lighting control from midi files

Hi Forum,

I can see there are quite a few threads about this, but I haven't been able to find a clear solution so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Setup / prerequisites:
  • iPad #1: running BandHelper
  • iPad #2: running Light Rider

  • I have some MIDI files that I'd like to play when a song is selected for the second time, so they stay in sync with the backing track, etc.
Right now, I've added them under "Recordings" - both as a file at the top, and also as the default MIDI file at the bottom of the page (I found a simple soundfont that it needs in order to play a MIDI file).
Is this the correct way to set this up?
  • When I play the file, I can see that Light Rider only receives "Note On vel: 127" and "Note On vel: 0", even though my raw MIDI file clearly contains both Note On and Note Off messages. If I use MidiWrench on the iPad with BandHelper, I can also see that a proper MIDI Note Off isn't being sent as expected.
Has anyone experienced the same issue and found a solution?

Thanks in advance! 8)

Hi Ralleberg,

Not sure if this will be any help, but here's how I use midi controller DMX lights:

Band helper and Luminair 4 on same iPad (2024 Pro)
Luminair set to midi note triggers.
Midi notes recorded (Cubase 14), files loaded into Midi Files folder in BH, then attached to Track audio track. Works perfectly.
I don't have midi note on 127 and off 0, just simply the relevant midi note for the lighting scene I want to use.

1. To send MIDI data in sync with a recording, you should attach the MIDI file to the recording. You do not need a SoundFont in this situation because the MIDI file is not generating sound.

2. You also submitted a help ticket about this, and we determined that BandHelper is sending Note On/Off messages but something else is converting the Note Off messages to Note On with a velocity of 0. That shouldn't matter because MIDI apps and devices should respond the same way to both, but the Light Rider app apparently doesn't.
